Youth orchestra named

PA Wellington! Seventy-four players from throughout New Zealand have been named for the 1979 National Youth Orchestra. The orchestra will meet in Auckland on August 19 for a week of rehearsals before giving concerts at Hamilton on August i 25 and Auckland on August! 26.

This year the orchestra will be ’ conducted by the Viennese-born international conductor, Georg Tintner, who now lives in Australia. The orchestra’s leader, for the second year in succesision, will be a Wellington I violinist, Simon Miller. Players include 22 from Wellington, 21 from Christchurch, 17 from Auckland, six from Dunedin, ,wo each from Hamilton and Nelson, and one each from Gisborne, Napier. Palmerston Nortn. and Invercargill. The programme for this year’s concerts will include Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, various operatic arias, and a specially commissioned work by the Christchurch composer, Dorothy Buchanan.

The youngest mempe' of the orchestra is a Nelson girl. Wendy Calder, aged 14. Also from Nelson is Rebecca Jackson. They are both violinists.
