Haka outcry dies
PA Auckland The outcry caused ny assaults on the University of Auckland engineering students’ haka party has died down in : some quarters. After the incident on May'l, the Race Relations Office at Auckland received about 12 complaints, many of them seeking prosecutions under section 25 of the Race Relations Act. But the Auckland race relations executive officer (Dr P. R. Sharpies) said that “now the heat had died down people realise they do not want to prosecute.” They wanted conciliation instead, and the office was moving to do this under another section of the act. “I am optimistic that the parties will get together and see the other’s point of view,” he said. There had been complaints against the university for allowing the incident to happen, against the University Maori Club for allegedly tipping off the assailants about the haka practice, and against persons for the remarks they made later.
