) PA Wellington The Royal New Zealand Navy needs at least one specialist ship with modern equipment to counter the possible laying of mines to block New Zealand ports, according to the Navy League. elusions of the defence White Paper published last November. The league said later that it had told Mr Gill that because of New Zealand’s reliance on seaborne trade, it was vulnerable to mining. This had been borne out by the mining rtf New Zealand ports immediately after the • outbreak of World War I and World War 11.
