Close union vote
Christchurch, Auckland, I Timaru and Hamilton mem-' bers of the New Zealand Commercial Travellers and Sales Representatives Union have voted to keep the unqualified preference clause in their awards. But the results of other meetings are not yet available. The clause makes membership of the union compulsory for all workers covered by the rules, but only financial members are allowed to vote. The president of the
[Canterbury branch of th< [union (Mr R. T. Taylor) sai, that the voting in Auckland and Hamilton was close, but Christchurch and Timaru workers supported the clause by big majorities. Results still have to come from Hawkes Bay, Tauranga and Otago-Southland, because the vote will be counted nationally. If a majority seek the clause, the union will negotiate with employers to have it inserted in the award covering the union’s members.
