Jobless total up 485
PA Wellington The number of registered unemployed has risen 485, according to figures released yesterday by the Minister of Labour (Mr Bolger). He said that 25,382 persons were registered with the Labour Department as seeking work at May 18, compared with 24,897 on April 27. In addition, at the end of April 25,598 persons were employed under the Government’s job-creation programmes. The Department of Social Welfare said yesterday that only 16,448 of the registered unemployed on May 18 were being paid an unemployment benefit, an increase of 1001 on the number being paid at May 4. Mr Bolger said that in the three weeks since April 27,
the number of unemployed had increased in 12 districts. The biggest increases had been in Hastings (186), Christchurch (184), Hamilton (156), Auckland (138), and Nelson (132). Decreases had occurred in 10 districts, including Rotorua (159), Wellington (157), and Lower Hutt (145). Of registered unemployed at May 18, 2940 were schoolleavers and 62 were tertiary students. Both these categories had dropped since the end of April. At May 18 the Labour Department had been told of 2066 job vacancies.
The number of registered unemployed in employment districts (April 27 figures in brackets) included: Blenheim 374 (360), Nelso” 558 (426), Greymouth 2 ,: (189), Christchurch 3862 (3678), Timaru 465 (380).
