Poll system ‘farce’

PA Wellington No Government should be entrusted with responsibility for administration of the voting system, said Social Credit’s deputy leader (Mr J. Dwyer) yesterday. He was commenting on the ousting of Mr M. Douglas (Labour) from the Hunua seat after the Electoral Court’s ruling. Mr Dwyer said the responsibility. for administration of voting should be put in the hands of an independent elections and polls commission. He described the democratic process as an unrepresentative, lop-sided farce.

The recount in Hunua, the findings Of the Court, its comments on the four Maori seats, and the “utter mess” in the management of the electoral rolls, would further shake the confidence and trust of the people in New Zealand’s democratic process, he said.

“Every New Zealander should pause to wonder how the National Party, which gained only 33 per cent of the votes last year, has now got control Of nearly 60 per cent of the seats in Parliament,” said Mr Dwyer.
