Education standards
Sir, —Whether we like to admit it or not, the standard of education in State schools has in recent years, deteriorated to the degree where State education qualifications are no longer sufficient recognition that a school leaver has the ability to develop executive or leadership qualities. Progressive firms set their own examinations for applicants for responsible positions. If teachers supervising school pedestrian crossings were to set a firm example to their students by reporting traffic offenders, and providing the required information to the Minister of Transport, there would be no talk about banthis worth-while exercise. The talk by teachers of additional pressure on children who undertake this task under responsible supervision, is piffling nonsense, and in line with their threats of militant action if the Government does not give in to their every unreasonable demand. Responsible leadership by example and encouragement, is ten thousand times
more effective than the advice of psychologists and the multitude of other advisers. —Yours, etc., FRANK FREEMAN. May 10, 1979.
