SMITHFIELD MARKET
The strong demand for New Zealand lamb continued in the United Kingdom last week, and wholesale prices increased Ip per lb. the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board reports in its weekly market survey. The recent wholesale increases are now being reflected in retail prices. More home-killed lamb was available, and smalls were quoted at 84-100 p per lb. MANUFACTURING BEEF End-users in the United States showed little interest last week in contracting forward at prices at present being asked by New Zealand exporters. Heavy imported beef arrivals, particularly from Australia, coupled with a downward trend in the domestic beef market, resulted in imported cowbeef trading at an average 137.5 U.S. cents per lb, c.i.f., compared with 139 c the previous week. MUTTON The mutton market in Japan was very quiet last week, and no sales have been reported by New Zealand exporters.
