Greyhounds Record treble at meeting

By

BOB SCHUMACHER

A record treble of $1675 and the first dead heat at a totalisator meeting in Christchurch were features of the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club's final evening meeting at Queen Elizabeth 11 Park last evening.

The big treble occurred when the seventh favourite, Redwood Lil, won the opening race, and only eight live tickets remained when Keytoe Trudi, the fifth favourite, won the second leg. Only one punter was fortunate to take the unpredictable Prodigious. which went an excellent race to win the third leg.

The dead heat occurred in the feature race, the $3OO Mayor’s Cup for class 3 dogs. Rimu Lass and Hawkesmor Sara had a great battle in the home straight, the lead changing several times and, after three prints of the photofinish, the two were placed equal first. The person most unconcerned about the outcome of the result was the Oxford trainer, Vai Bean. She was the trainer of both longtails and she owned Hawkesmor Sara as well. She trains the hardy Rimu Lass for Eric Findlay, a publican on the West Coast,

Hawkesmor Sara was first out in the 540 m races and Rimu Lass trailed nicely on the rails. The favourite, Baron Snoopy, swooped up to the pair along the back and looked a big threat, but he seemted to pull a hind muscle soon after and almost stopped. Doone Spartan added interest when he raced three wide around the home bend and, in a stirring battle to the judge, Rimu Lass, on the inside, and Hawkesmor Sara could not be separated with Doone Spartan only half a length away. The magnificent Sarkhan— Sally Havoc fawn bitch, Lisa Havoc, raced away from her opposition to win the $2OO event for class 8 and 9 greyhounds. Arikl Sue, a noted brilliant beginner, assumed her customary position tn front, but she was unable to establish her normal big break along the back straight and Lisa Havoc rushed up to join her on the home bend.

It was all Lisa Havoc down the home straight and she won easily by five lengths from Keytoe Ben which finished stoutly to cut Ariki Sue out of third placing. With Lisa Havoc winning the first leg of the second treble, and Cracker Starlet, an equally hot favourite, comfortably beating Pioneer Sam in the second leg, a queue resembling Lancaster Park proportions for an All Blacks versus Lions test delayed the running of the last race. But the favoured runners, Go Benjamin and Nighborn, were unable to catch the flying pacemaker, Crafty Silent, which rounded off a $39 second treble. Although the crowd was only about 1000. it invested more than 540.000, which surprised the club’s officials. Results:—
