Herbicide ‘cleared’
PA Wellington Consultants are reported to have told the Health Department that there is no evidence to support a ban of the controversial herbicide, 2,4,5-T. They have reported, to the department since a recent study in the United States said that the chemical was linked to an increase in miscarriages. The United States Food and Drug Administration has since banned the chemical. The New Zealand Health Department obtained a copy of the study’s results and asked its consultants for comment. Their report, not yet released, has been completed this week. It will be presented to the Agricultural Chemicals Board. The main findings of the report have been leaked to Wellington’s “Evening Post” by informed sources. It is expected that the Agricultural Chemicals Board, acting on the consultants’ report, will decide that there is no reason to put further restrictions on the use of 2,4,5-T.
