Foyt top in practice
NZPA Indianapolis The veteran racing driver A. J. Foyt showed that he was a serious contender for his fifth victory in the Indianapolis 500. posting the top practice speed of the day and the month yesterday. Foyt was clocked at 310 km/h (194 mph) as the pace quickened in preparation for Saturday’s opening of qualifications.
Rick Mears, Johnny Rutherford and the defending champion Al Unser, all clocked at more than 304 km/h (190 mph) during yesterday’s practice session. In a recent rule change, the United States Auto Club limited eight-cyclinder engines to only 50 inches (1270 mm) of boost to make them more competitive with four-cylinder cars.
