Vatican job for Bishop
The Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby) has been appointed to the Vatican Secretariat for the Promotion of Christian Unity by Pope John Paul 11. Tw e n t y-one bishops from throughout the world are given five-year appointments to the secretariat, which is the Church’s agency concerned with ecumenism. Bishop Ashby (above), who has been chairman of the New Zealand Commission on Ecumenism since 1965, is the first New Zealander to be appointed to the secretariat, whose members meet in Rome annually. Bishop Ashby said he was honoured by the appointment. He felt that New Zealand could make a unique contribution to international ecumenism because it was a relatively young country where religious differences had not yet had time to become entrenched.
