Silver Star costs
PA Wellington If the present Silver Star express service between Wellington and Auckland were made to pay. a passenger’s single fare would be $63.72, the General Manager of the Railways, (Mr M. Hayward) said. He was commenting on the announcement that the train will be withdrawn from service on June 10 till the end of this year for alterations. Mr Hayward said this would be double the present fare of $33.75 which will go up
on May 13 to 837.15. The single airfare from Wellington to Auckland is 546, and that from Christchurch to Auckland $64. Mr Hayward said the savings in the changes would approach S2M, figures which had been worked out by railways accountants “in whom I have every confidence.” “Anyone can see looking at this train it is losing money because of poor patronage. Sometimes we nave just 30 or 40 passengers with 15 to 18 staff and that’s a telling point.”
