Okarito forest
Sir, — The Director-Gen-eral of Forests is very defensive about logging Okarite. It is not surprising when one knows, first, that it does not need to be logged because there is plenty of timber closer to the sawmill; second, that the type of logging (sustained yield management) leads to decay of the forest; and third, that there are a lot of people who have visited Okarito and think it is a wonderful place. It is good that there are a few years before logging starts. With the intervening election we may be able to remove the Minister of Forests, Lands and Environment. This will be more effective than making suomissions to forest management plans. These plans ac not consider the no-logging choice, nor do they tabe notice of conservation submissions. What we want is a national park, not an assurance on logging. — Yours, etc., GRAEME LOH. ’ May 9, 1979.
