“The Deer Hunter”
Sir, — I am suspicious. Why are the media giving such huge space to “The Deer Hunter,” (“The Press,” May 9)? Is it some kind of publicity stunt? Is someone receiving kick-backs for services rendered? What has it all to do with the real war in Vietnam? It has been said that the Americans have difficulty distinguishing between" entertainment and reality. There will be nothing unreal about the profits made from this film — that’s for real. As such a film is entertainment, why would critics and reviewers introduce moral profundity as if the film portrayed reality? At most, such films are a rehash of selected parts of what supposedly happened interpreted by persons more concerned with money and their own fantasies than with the portrayal of truth. These persons only compound all of our difficulties in failing to distinguish between entertainment and reality — especially now that that entertainment is an industry and a way of life. —Yours, etc., L. J. ROBINSON, Kaiapoi. May 9, 1979. [The film has received much publicity because it is so controversial. This newspaper has received no “kickbacks.” The writer of the May 9 article paid to see the film.—Editor.]
