Investigation into science education
PA Wellington The teaching and learning of science is the subject of a major research project which has started at the University of Waikato. The Minister of Education (Mr Wellington) said that the aim of the project was to investigate the teaching and learning of science at Form 1 to Form 4 level, to identify some of the key difficulties and to find ways of overcoming them. The project, which will run until August, 1981, is funded by the Education Department and directed by two
University of Waikato staff members, Professor P. S. Freyberg and Dr R. J. Osborne.
They will be assisted by an advisory committee consisting of primary and secondary school teachers, teachers’ college and university staff, and departmental officers. “The project will make a substantial contribution to the learning of science at the Form 1 to Form 4 level by providing sound, practical information for teachers as well as useful guidelines for teacher education and curriculum development in science,” Mr Wellington said.
