Delays in demolishing river wall

Greymouth reporter It took two hours by up to 1000 volunteers to build the sandbag wall on the Greymouth waterfront on Sunday, but its removal will take considerably more time. Work will not be completed until tomorrow.

The bags are being emptied by Greymouth Borough Council staff, assisted by railwaymen, and fed into a loader which dumps the same into two council trucks.

Shunting on the waterfront tracks, which are adjacent to the wall, has been

limited. A shunter was knocked from a waggon yesterday. The secretary of the Greymouth branch of the National Union of Railwaymen (Mr T. J. Isherwood) said that every time a rake of waggons passed the sandbag wall, the vibrations moved the sandbags, and lifted the waggons. Further talks between the union and Railways management were held yesterday. The Stillwater yards are being used to ease the pressure on the Greymouth yards.
