Extra petrol refused

Greymouth reporter

The Minister of Energy (Mr Birch) has declined a request for petrol dispensation to assist persons attending the Whataroa School centenary next weekend.

The approach had been made by the member of Parliament for West Coast (Mr T. K. Burke) because of the considerable distances people would have to travel. Very few, he said, would be able to travel to Whataroa and return on one tank of petrol. One of the joint secretaries of the jubilee committee (Mrs R. F. Pamment) said yesterday that 325 replies from former pupils had been received. Many were living in centres away from the Coast, and enrolments had come from Auckland to Invercargill. “We have not yet heard of anybody not coming because of the petrol restrictions, but it will mean that they will have to stay another day or two before they can get supplies to return home,” she said. Many of them would lose some time off work. The result would be that there would be no difference in the amount of petrol used.
