Renault top U.K. car-importer

Renault has displaced Datsun as Britain’s top importer. The latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders in Britain show that in the month of March and in the first three months of this year Renault sold more cars than any other importer, and is currently taking 6.81 per cent of the United Kingdom market. The new Renault 18 has been an. instant success in Britain, and the introduction of the sporty Renault 5 Gordini and the luxury 30TX are expected to boost the French company’s sales even further.

Britain’s top-seller in March was the Ford Cortina, with 21,002 sales, and another Ford, the Escort, was second, with 14,442 sales. The Austin/Morris Mini was third with 9438 and the Allegro was next with 8580. Ford also took sixth (Fiesta), seventh (Granada) and ninth (Capri) places. Total cars in the first three months of 1979 were 476,093, the second highest first-quarter figure on record. Imported cars took 55 per cent of the March market, the highest level so far.
