Abortion policy
Sir, — Miss Waring’s statements regarding menstrual extraction have led to discussion of the availability of termination of pregnancy in New Zealand. Many women cannot obtain termination of pregnancy and the present system is at best an attempt to give Government control over a medical procedure which should never have become a subject of political concern, and have remained the concern of the woman and her doctor. Menstrual extraction, performed by skilled persons, is equally as safe if not more so, than the suction curretage method, which, in New Zealand and Australia, has had a high number of complications. Women in New Zealand are entitled to an alternative method of termination of pregnancy, and fertility control. Those who write about “murder of the foetus,” the sanctity of life, and sagging morals, should consider that the foetus may have the right to life, but equally, has the right to expect to remain unborn, if the mother, considers herself unable to nurture her child towards a satisfactory life. — Yours, etc.,
ANNE O’LOUGHLIN. May 5, 1979.
Sir, — Why this fear of allowing women to take coni trol of their lives? Is not the abortion question one of territory — the State versus woman’s control of her body? I applaud Marilyn Waring for her courage and her concern. — Yours, etc., ROSALIE SNOYINK, Darfield. May 8, 1979.
