N.Z. drill given to Philippines

PA Wellington New Zealand has given the Philippines a drilling rig I for use in development in geothermal power. The gift was jointly announced by the Philippines Minister of Energy (Mr Geronimo Velasco) and the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs (Mr Thomson). Mr Velasco thanked New Zealand for its aid since 1972 in searching for and developing geothermal resources on the islands of Leyte and Negros. The joint project, due to end next year, has received 513.5 M in New Zealand aid and has proved particularly successful on Leyte where the Philippines Government is building a 112 MW power

station at the Tongonan geothermal field, which should be in production in 1981. On the completion of New Zealand’s direct involvement in the development of the field, the drilling rig will be given to the Philippines Government. The rig was used by the engineering firm of Kingston, Reynolds, Thom and Allardice, Ltd, of Auckland. The two Ministers plan to co-operate in a composite project financed under New Zealand bilateral assistance to the Philippines. New Zealand will continue to give technical and scientific help with the rapidly expanding nation-wide programme of geothermal exploration in the Philippines.
