Gardens kiosk to be restored
The Botanic Gardens tea kiosk, gutted by fire last month, is expected to be restored and re-opened by September. The basic structure, window frames, and brickwork are all salvageable, according to a report before the Christchurch City Council’s parks and recreation committee yesterday. The cost of restoring the kiosk has yet to be determined. It was insured for its total replacement value of $97,000 and an insurance assessor’s report is expected soon. The council’s Director of Parks (Mr H. G. Gilpin)
said that the council would have to pay $lO,OOO for new carpet and some fittings which were not fully insured. Committee members were keen to have the kiosk rebuilt in its original form. The report said that this could be done although additional strengthening would have to be added to the roof to meet earthquake provisions. Cr Helen Garrett suggested that any member of the public interested in the design of the kiosk should approach the committee soon.
