Brief stop by shunters
Greymouth reporter The sandbag wall on the Grey mouth Wharf was removed yesterday by the Greymouth Borough Coun;ci!’s works staff. This, however, led to railway shunters stopping work lin the morning because of! the wall’s close proximity to[ I the tracks and the possible idanger to the shunters. The Railways area traffic i manager (Mr L. Newman) I said that after negotiations [ with representatives of the | National Union of RailIwaymen, the shunters had i agreed to carry out a limited 'amount of work, and he had I asked the Borough Council [to remove the wall as (quickly as possible. I The chief engineer of the j Westland Catchment Board [(Mr H. E. Clarke) said that [ the noard was finalising the j design of a flood wall, on the river side for the borough. The permanent wall was first suggested after the river had topped the wharf in the January, 1977, flood. A precise survey was being carried out after earlier preliminary estimates, and the final design work would be completed soon, he said. Repair gangs worked until 2.15 a.m. on Monday hosing down silt from footpaths, dismantling the wall, and cleaning silt from sumps.
