U.K. elections

Sir, — Those familiar with your political utterances will know that your organ tends to the Right, and will understand your eagerness to welcome Mrs Thatcher’s success. This is no excuse, however, for the confusion of your Saturday editorial. In this you applaud the Conservative win, and then associate the following words with Mrs Thatcher: “quite reckless,” “apocalyptic confrontation,” “injudiciously,” “soaring unemployment,” and “economic chaos.” How can these be “cause for a good deal of rejoicing” and “the best possible result for the. future of Britain,” as you claim? It would have been more useful — though of course more taxing for you — to examine Conservative policy ciosely: you would have found not only the significance for New Zealand of Tory Community views and inconsistencies in their mon-

etary policies, but also the intellectual light-headedness that marks your editorial. — Yours, etc., P. D. EVANS. May 6, 1979.
