U.K. elections

Sir, — Now that the country in which I was born and in which the ancestors of a great many New Zealanders were born, has chosen a woman for Prime Minister, may this not give an incentive to a complete equality of the sexes not only in politics but in all kinds of public life? As a child I used to moan, “If only 1 were a boy” knowing that as a woman many things I wanted to do would be denied to me. Girls, of course, have a very much freer life ahead of them nowadays. But do not let us go on with this talk about “woman’s lib.” Let us just talk of “people” and look forward to a time when sex will not even be considered when choosing careers for young people. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) HELEN CAMERON, Geraldine. May 5, 1979.
