Assurance given on Okarito logging

The selective logging of the South Okarito Forest, planned to take place in several years time, will not intrude on the white heron sanctuary and will not upset the scenic qualities of the area, according to the Director-General of forests (Mr G. M. O’Neill). Mr O’Neill, in a statement, said the Government intended to manage the forest for amenity, recreational and productive pursuits. The only

logging to be done would be of a highly selective type with careful planning to sustain industries in the region. Draft management proposals would be submitted for public scrutiny before any logging was done. Only 30 per cent of the forest would be affected, and the scenic walks and features of the area, such as the Alpine lakes and the Three and Five Mile lagoons, would remain undisturbed, said Mr O’Neill.
