Maintenance work on container crane
Harbour Board staff are using the lull in traffic at the container terminal to replace nearly a mile of steel wire in the terminal’s [ huge container crane. Since the crane was commissioned. in June. 1977, 85 ships • have used the terminal. The wire is used to transport i the containers, some with up to 140 tonnes of cargo, from ship to wharf. It is checked every three months for wear ; The work is described as normal maintenance. When this maintenance is done depends on the work the crane has done, gradual deterioration of the wire, and any damage it has undergone. The cost of the wire alone is $6OOO. The work will be completed b.v the time the container ship Botany Bay arrives from Wellington on Saturday. ARRIVALS Nil DEPARTURES
