Dates for United Council

The new Canterbury United Council will be formed officially on May 31, and territorial local bodies are required to appoint their members by June 30. Mr J. H. Gray, the United Council’s principal officerdesignate, said yesterday that a first meeting of the 26-member body would be held on July 25 in the Christchurch Town Hall. Eventually, the new council’s main job will be regional planning. But in the meantime, the existing Canterbury Regional Planning Authority will carry on with its job. When the transfer is made, possibly at the end of this financial year, the planning authority’s staff will come under the City Council, the new body’s administering authority. The United Council’s main job until that time may be to draw up a co-ordinated Civil Defence plan for the region.
