New Zealand is unlikely to have nuclear power this century. The Royal Commission on Nuclear Power Generation in New Zealand said in its report last year that New Zealand did nbt need to make a firm decision cm nuclear power until at least 1992 to 1996. The then Minister of Energy Resources (Mr Gair) described the com-
mission’s recommendation as realistic and desirable. The commission said that a significant nuclearpower programme should be economically possible in New Zealand in the early part of the next century. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Rowling) said last year that a Labour Government would not allow nuclear-power development.
