Tests for new drug
PA Auckland Clinical trials of an anticancer drug which has taken nearly 12 years to develop v’ill begin throughout New Zealand in the next three months. About 400 bladder-cancer patients will be involved in the study, which is expected to take four or five years. The drug, misonidzole, was developed in Britain by a team of researchers including a Wellington doctor, Dr Alan Gray. Dr Gray said that experiments with the drug began in Britain 10 or 12 years ago, and clinical tests had been going on overseas since 1974. The tests are scheduled in four centres, Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North and Wellington. Christchurch may be included later. Dr Gray said it could be another 10 or 12 years before effectiveness ”of thel drug was known.
