More students at Lincoln

About 1493 students have enrolled at Lincoln College this year, an increase of 3.5 per cent on last year. The acting principal (Professor R. H. M. Langer) told the college council yesterday of a “welcome” 5 per cent increase in the number of women students this year, 271 women having enrolled. More enrolments for agricultural commerce, horticultural, and parks and landscape courses accounts for much of the over-all growth in student numbers.

The college continues to attract many post-graduate students. This year they make up 17 to 18 per cent of enrolments. Just under onethird of all students are enrolled in undergraduate diploma courses. Restoration of the stonework on Ivey Hall had been extended to include the large bay window areas facing the Memorial Hall. One of the large mullions was badly cracked, and was in danger of collapsing. This will be replaced, and the window tidied up. A gift of $4561 from the Ivey Hall restoration fund towards this work was accepted by the council. The money is profits from the sale of books on the hall’s history, and from postcards and Christmas cards bearing its picture. The college will express concern to the Paparua County council about the narrowness of Springs Road for cyclists, and will suggest that a cycle lane be built. The council was told that because of the petrol shortage, more students and staff were cycling to the college, and that Springs Road was very busy at peak times. Concern was also expressed about traffic delays at the intersection of Springs Road and the Main South Road.
