THE UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC APPLICATIONS are invited for the following positions at the University of the South Pacific: LECTURER IN EDUCATIONCOMMERCIAL STUDIES AND SCHOOL EXPERIENCE (Post 79/30) The successful applicant will be responsible for coordinating the Diploma of Education-Commercial Studies programme. The programme is of three years duration, post-secondary, sub-d *gret and is designed to pr ipare diplomates to teach commercial subjects (bookkeeping, office practice, marketing and other subjects) to junior secondary school students. The successful applicant will be responsible for the curriculum and the administration of the programme. He or she should be qualified to teach one or more of the subjects, such as business law, economics, accounting, etc., and will be expected to draw upon other personnel resources of the university to execute the curriculum. He or she will supervise the school experience (student teaching) of all the students—approximately 20 students in the second and third years, and will also be expected to assist in other subject areas taken by diploma and degree students in teacher education programmes. A good bachelor s degree is the minimum qualification required although an advanced degree or certificate in teaching or equivalent is preferred. Three years teaching of commercial subjects or supervision of commercial studies students or teachers will be an advantage. SENIOR LECTURER/ LECTURER IN HISTORY AND POLITICS (Post 79/31) Candidates should possess good postgraduate qualifications. preferably a doctoiate, and teaching experience at the tertiary level. The successful applicant must ba qualified in history, but may well also be interested in Political Studies. The discipline Is presently occupied in reviewing the structure of its course programme so as to provide coherent offerings in both history and politics at all levels As part of this development, the successful applicant will have a primary responsibility to reorganise and present the first-year degree course in history. This will be a general study in Modern History, dealing particularly with developments in Western Europe, Asia, and America which affect ihc contemporary world of the South Pacific. Tlie course structure is more flexible at second and thlrd-year levels, where t'ta successful applicant would also be expected to contribute; staff members usually have some opportunity of teaching within the field of their own speciality. Extension (external studies) teaching will also be required. Salary in accordance with qualifications and experience in one of the following scales: Senior Lecturer F 111.960F 514,135. Lecturer: F58175-F511,563. In addition the university provides gratuity amounting to 15 per cent of basic salary, superannuation contribution, appointment allowance, partly furnished accommodation at a maximum rental at present of 12j per cent of salary; this is under review.
