West Coast resources
Sir, —So various vested interests on the West Coast want complete control of local resources (“The Press,” March 26). But are they prepared to accept the responsibilities that go with control? Their blanket opposition to national parks and their curious suggestion that conservation groups behave in undemocratic ways indicate not. The New Zealand taxpayer provides massive subsidies for the West Coast and so has a direct interest in how that region is governed. Maui gas does not belong solely to Taranaki people. In the same way, the resources of the West Coast, including native forests, belong to the whole country. They must not be destroyed and exploited for the shortterm benefit of a few.— Yours, etc.,
S. R. JUNE. March 26, 1979.
