New bicycle stands
Sir, — The Bicycle Planning Committee advised the City Council that its new design of bicycle stand is defective. Yet we see that the council has replaced the old stands in the Square with these defective ones. What a waste of time and money. — Yours, etc.. T. D. KERR, (Assistant Co-ordinator) Bicycle Planning 1 Committee. March 12, 1979.
[Mr J. H. Gray, the general manager and Town Clerk, replies: “The new type of cycle stand was discussed with representatives of the Bicycle Planning Committee (as indeed most cycle proposals are) before being adopted by the council. The committee raised no great objection to the stands at the time. They are similar in design to one recommended as being “very good for shortterm parking” in the “Bicycle Planning Book published by the Friends of the Earth. All cycle models can be accommodated in the stands without difficulty (an important factor) and the racks satisfy the many requirements which must be met on permanently installed street furniture of this type. This particular design would not necessarily, be used for the long-term parking of cycles. The council’s traffic division is happy to discuss cycle matters with anybody and is looking for sites or methods of increasing secure (possibly coveted) long-stay cycle parking.”]
