Dispute over fish ship
Sir, — The dispute over the unloading of the New Zealand-West German joint venture fish factory vessel Wesermunde, demonstrates the usual stranglehold with which the Waterside Workers’ Federation dominates the seamen’s work. The seamen on the Wesermunde were stopped from unloading the ship to prevent a long, expensive wait in port at Bluff. The West German delegation which was here to discuss joint ventures will have some reservations about becoming associated with a country which is handicapped by the striking force, the most blatant being the constant demands by the Cook Strait crews. From all accounts, West Germany has few industrial work disputes and their prosperity comes from hard work and co-operative endeavour. Taxation to pay the unemployed is the snag on which New Zealand will founder unless relief comes soon. — Yours, etc.,
L. E. REID. March 26, 1979.
