Warning on weeds
Boat owners have been warned by the Ministry of \griculture to clean their boats thoroughly before moving front one lake or river to another. A spokesman for the Ministry’s noxious-plants -ection, Mr Jack Fitzharris, paid it was import - ait to clean boats to prevent the spread of squatic weeds. “These weeds are a treat to farm production, ■ydro-eiectricity producion, and the general environment,” he said. Boating ropes and bilge vater were ideal transport redia for the movement rom lake to lake or river o river of aquatic weeds. The weed causing most concern was known as tagarosiphen major, which was already widespread. For example divers had '■’eared 15 tonnes of the weed from boating lanes in Lake Wanaka this year.
