Rugby players for South Africa

Sir, — Would Frank Freeman (March 24) feel the same sentiments about New Zealanders playing apartheid rugby in South Africa were he a member of a South African non-racial sports group? He would then belong to a body (be it the South African Rugby Union, Lawn Tennis Union, Cricket Board of Control, etc.) which since its inception had seen the apartheid groups in that sport receive all the Government support, and almost all of the commercial sponsorship and publicity while his group got what crumbs it could produce for itself amid official hostility. And he would have seen overseas sportspeople, such as New Zealand rugby players, largely ignore his simple plea for fraternal help. The help that is asked of us here is to stop giving recognition, comfort, and a sense of international respectability to the apartheid sports bodies. We are asked simply to refuse to participate in any way in apartheid sport. — Yours, etC " A. J. CAMPBELL. March 25, 1979.
