Export disadvantages
Sir, —To me, your editorial of March 23 poses an insoluble problem for the ordinary Kiwi. In effect, it said that, the more successful New Zealand is in marketing her basic products overseas, the more the price to the New Zealander of said products should automatically increase, thus killing any prospect of returning to the single-figure inflation promised by you know who. But apart from this, the increases in bread and milk were justified on a totally different premise; therefore, the consumer cannot possibly win as the prospect of a stable internal economy is cancelled out even if our exports do prosper beyond all expectations. Frank Sinatra had a popular hit entitled, “Come Fly with Me.” No wonder so many are following his advice.—Yours, etc., ARTHUR MAY. Rangiora. March 24, 1979.
