Spear-shaft embedded in boy’s leg

PA Tauranga; A Rotorua boy was able to manage a smile on Tuesday even though he had a Btee! spear-shaft embedded in his thigh. Paul Fuller, aged 13, was walking round the base of Mount Maunganui when he slipped and fell on to the spear-shaft.

Mr Colin Hewens, a lifeguard supervisor, said lifeguards were setting up at the Mount Maunganui Surf Club headquarters about 10 a.m. when a man came to ask for help for the boy. “We took first-aid equipment, including oxygen, a stretcher, and a hacksaw blade,” Mr Hewens said. “When we got there 1 spent about half an hour sawing through the shaft, so that the barbed point could be pulled out.

“One of the lifeguards, Robin Bell, administered oxygen to the boy to counter shock. He remained calm and was very brave throughout the ordeal.” The spear could not be fully removed, but it was moved so that Paul could be put on the stretcher and taken to an ambulance. He was treated at Tauranga Hospital and discharged.
