Brush with death by youth
PA Hastings Gordon Levett, aged 17, Hastings, escaped a big shock on Sunday when his feet touched 11,000-volt power lines during his first parachute jump over the Bridge Pa aerodrome. Mr Levett, who was wearing rubber boots, landed safely after touching the lines.
According to the Hawke’s Bay Electric Power Board’s chief engineer (Mr S. J. Winfield) he was “more than lucky” to escape unhurt. “I tried to find a way to get out of touching the lines when I was coming down,” Mr Levett said yesterday. “When I couldn’t I put my feet together as we had been told and my feet touched the lines. I then landed safely.”
