Fire risk less
Work has resumed in all Canterbury State forests, and all forest walks are open.
Work stopped on Monday in the Omihi and Eyrewell forests when the fire-risk level rose to 9.5 points on the scale of 10.
' A Forest Service spokesiman said that the fire risk ’was still high, as forests iwere still very dry. Howlever, a south-westerly wind ’change had lowered the risk.
The Hanmer Forest walk was reopened yesterday. This walk had been the only one closed during the dry spell. Fires could be lit only in approved fire-places, said the Forest Service spokesman. Even then, extreme caution had to be taken in north-westerly conditions.
