Vietnamese refugees
Sir, —So 1979 is to be known as “The Year of the Child.” Many New Zealanders will give only lip service to this, and their excuse will be that there is not the opportunity in New Zealand for them to get involved. How many New Zealanders would stand back and watch a child drown? Yet this is just what they are doing when they totally ignore the urgent need of the Vietnamese refugee boat people. The objection might be made that we cannot take in more people, many of whom are unskilled, while unemployment remains high. I believe that when people are in such an appalling situation, humanitarian considerations outweigh the economic ones. New Zealanders must realise that we can only gain in every way by getting involved in “The Year of the Child.” Children are dying daily in and from these refugee boats.—Yours, etc., PATRICK T. MURPHY. January 16, 1979.
