Engine drivers’ registration
Sir, —Mr Jones, employers’ advocate, considers our association with the Marine Department is just a “clerical convenience” (“The Press,” January 12). The Marine Department and the Government seemingly think differently. Since the Boilers, Lifts and Cranes Act of 1950 was repealed on October 23, 1969, and a new clause introduced, increasing the fine from £2OO to $lOOO, the rest of the clauses are still in force regarding instant dismissal and recall of the man’s ticket. He will never hold a boiler job in New Zealand or Australia; in other words, his career is finished. We can also be heavily fined by the local City Councillors for emitting too much smoke. Surely all these restrictions are worth $4 a week. I challenge Mr Jones to refute or confirm the above facts concerning our claim for recognition of our ticket.—Yours, etc., JOCK GRIEVE. January 15, 1979.
