Golden Bay hit by gale
PA Nelson A gale cut a kilometrewide swathe through Golden Bay yesterday, downing power and telephone lines and littering roads with trees and debris.
The blast swept in from the sea during an earlymorning thunderstorm, causing havoc up to five kilometres inland.
) A Golden Bay County Council spokesman said that the district had been in the grip of a storm with heavy rain when the gale struck at Waitapu at 8.15 a.m. “It lasted only for about 30 minutes, but it was almost incredible,” he said. “Trees are down where it swept through, power and telephone lines are down, and there is debris everywhere. ' All Staff were out with i chain saws and equipment to !clear roads.
Power and telephone ser vices were restored yester day afternoon.
