U.S. recognition of China

Sir, — I disagree with your editorial on the recognition of Communist China

by the United States. The United States has deliberately and cold-bloodedly sold out another friend. She de-erted Vietnam and Cambodia to communism — a system clearly opposed by countless numbers of these unfortunate people who are risking their necks rather than stay under totalitarian dictatorships. We must now question the worth of our own defence agreements with the United States. It is obvious A.N.Z.U.S. is not worth the paper it is written on. Will we be sold down the drain when the United States finds it expedient? We must look for genuinely anti-Communist allies prepared to assist us and resist all Communist aggression. We can no longer hide behind what is obviously a paper tiger. — Yours, etc., E. SUTHERLAND. December 19, 1978.
