Capping editors pledge clean-up

The editors of the Lincoln College and University of Canterbury capping magazines have promised to clean up their publications—and the Christchurch City Council is waiting to see just how far they will do so.

Students’ Association leaders at both universities have told the council that they will improve the standards of their magazines. At the University of Canterbury. the services of a “journalist of high literarv calibre” have been retained for magazine articles, according to a recent deputation to the council’s health and general committee. Also, more emphasis will be put on political satire. The Lincoln College maga-

zine will also have more political and satirical material, the “Ram” censorship committee having been reconvened to approve content before the magazine is published. Both associations said they would name the chanties they were supporting and a higher percentage of University of Canterbury proceeds would be given tr its charity.

Cr Newton Dodge said h» was not satisfied that enough would be done. "They wer« quite clear that they wouk not be removing the smu from the magazines, as thej would not sell.” he said But Sir Robert Macfariam said he hoped there would b< some improvement.
