Market remains weak
I’he O.P.E.C. oil price rise further depressed Australian markets yesterday as buyers withdrew and sellers marked their stocks down. A number of other factors, such as the airline dispute and the possibility of another ‘petrol strike, also served to depress the market The sell-out by the Belgian company, Sibeka, of its share in the Ashton joint venture brought the other diamond [venture partners back as [well as a number of other [diamond stocks. i CRA fell five cents to 340 c, Ashton eased two cents to 90 cents and Northern Mining dropped 10 cents to 115 c, while elsewhere Carr Boyd and Magnet eased two cents each, Northern West shed three cents and Jones mining dropped four cents. Investors, believing at last
in the advantages to local oil stocks from the O.P.E.C. rise, marked oil stocks firmer, with BHP gaining 2c to 868 c and AOG and Bridge firming 1c each. Coal stocks were disappointing with Coal and Allied dropping 10c to 510. Utah shedding sc, and Thiess and Oakbridge falling 2c each. Uranium miners also eased back, but Western Mining and Bougainville both firmed Ic. On the industrials boards, the Bank of NSW, the CBC, and the National all eased, but ANZ and CBA were firmer.
