Teacher resignations

Sir, — Many New Zealand teachers are leaving New Zealand but not the teaching profession as suggested by A. K. Grant and your editorial. Rather they continue their expertise throughout the Commonwealth, where they have a higher status and consequently better conditions and salaries. It is not enough to be continually bashed with the basics argument; we need the recognition as well. When New Zealand society believes that teaching their children should be rewarded at the same rate as my hairdresser fixing my head of hair or my mechanic fixing my 100,000 mile car then maybe they will stay. — Yours, J. DRAKE. December 13, 1978.
