Freezing industry

Sir, — It is interesting to hear Mr G. E. Rennie’s complaint on behalf of Federated Farmers regarding his request ,to allow the Meat Board access to Submissions for the increased killing charges. Before the election, the president of Federated Farmers challenged the political parties on this very matter. He received replies, one of which I have in front of me from Labour’s agriculture spokesman, Mr Bruce Barclay. Mr Barclay supported the request and in fact agreed that the chairman of both the Meat and Wool Boards, plus the presi» dent of Federated Farmers, should have access to the submissions. Once again we see a Labour Party policy which is wanted by the farmers, given no publicity by the hierarchy of Federated Farmers who ctmtinue blindly to back the National Party because of some misconstrued conception that the Tories are best for the rural community. — Yours, etc., STEPHEN RAINBOW. December 2, 1978.

Sir, — Your correspondents could try doing without farmers. They would not consume anything deprived from the land, e.g. beer, tobacco, paper, natural fibres and the more obvious products. It would be interesting to see them in six months, if still available of course. — Yours, etc., SHIRLEY BENNETT. December 3, 1978.
