“Open Pulpit"

Sir, — Canon Lowe does well to cover himself (November 30) with the statement that he finds difficulty in discussing “Open Pulpit” objectively. It became clear during the debate with Mr Richards that he was playing more than Devil’s Advocate and subscribed wholeheartedly to the views he put forward to the exclusion of any rational argument. Each objection was answered by Mr Richards articulately and logically. Any annoyance was the result of Bob Lowe’s persistent failure seemingly to even listen to, much less understand, his point of view. As a constructive debate I scored it 486 to 132 in favour of Trevor Richards. Further, never at any stage did Mr Richards hol'd himself out as a “prophetic figure” or “in the messianic role” but simply as an individual acting according to his conscience, not in the best interests of the Government, but in the best interests of New Zealand —Yours, etc., M. R. SCOTT. December 1, 1978.
